Holiday Nails 2011

28 Nov

At my local Walgreens I picked up the most (in my view) intriguing color from Wet ‘n Wild’s Holiday Collection: Back Alley Deals.

This is a gorgeous purple glitter with bright magenta large circular glitter throughout. In the bottle I loved it, but applying it was a different story.

While I usually LOVE Wet ‘n Wild’s glitters, this one was streaky and didn’t apply evenly. I think this is a polish that will either require a dark base coat or more than 2 coats on it’s own. You decide:

Overall I love the color but wish it applied better. On the plus side, it dries super fast & really hard!

What are your holiday nails going to be this season? I’d love to hear!

The story of Goldilocks and Orly’s Bare Rose Polish

23 Nov

So last night there was A LOT of trial and error with Orly’s French Manicure Polish in Bare Rose.

I know what you’re thinking – this is not a new polish. I am aware of that, but it is new to me as I usually do my French with a light pink or beige. Well I’ve been wanting a more natural look and found great reviews about this polish, but it took a few tries to get the color to look just right on my skin tone (I’m fair with pink undertones). I was aiming at a more natural looking French manicure so could take a break from my usual pink and white.

First I was told to apply two coats over bright white tips so that I have a natural looking tip. Big mistake! It made my tips look too pink and the rest of my nail neon. There’s no picture, it came off as soon as I saw the neon.

Then I was told two coats of Bare Rose and a light nude on the tip. I tried that but ended up with a too bright combo that wasn’t the look I was going for. It’s a cute color combo, nude and hot pink, but not right for my nails.

Finally I ended up with one coat (when is the last time I did that?) of Bare Rose and a light nude tip. Just perfect! I finished off with my favorite top coat & now my nails look like an enhanced version of natural (just like when you go out with only concealer and mascara)!

Turkey Trot Tresses

20 Nov

As Turkey Trots come up this week, one of the decisions you’ll be making is how to wear your hair on race day! When choosing race day hair, you have a few choices for medium or long hair: the ponytail, the braid, or the bun.

The Ponytail

The ponytail is the classic choice that is both functional and stylish.

The Bun

I personally love this style is because it keeps my hair not only out of my eyes, but also off of my back and shoulders. This look can also be very romantic and chic, but I highly suggest using more than one hair-holder if you have long hair.

The Braid

Braiding your hair is another great option while running. One of the best parts about braids is that unlike ponytails, there is the option to keep them from swinging. This style also adds an extra level of pizzazz to your running attire if you decide to get creative and do a side braid or fishtail. Plus, if you want to keep your hair off your neck, simply wrap your braid around itself to create a bun and secure with an elastic.

I cannot tell you enough how much I love Sierra Trading Post! Such great discounts on outdoor gear!

3. I’ve been lusting over the Lululemon Live Simply Jacket ($98). I’m relatively tall (5’10”) with a long torso, so it looks perfect for winter! I wonder if they’ll have a Black Friday sale?

4. Good luck to everyone racing in early Turkey Trots this weekend! I’m still not able to run but will be there in spirit!

Chilly Chic

17 Nov

As the weather gets cooler you find yourself adjusting your running wardrobe. You need something that will cover a variety of temperatures and you want a top that will carry you through the season.

Enter Under Armour’s AllSeasonGear Heather Crew ($45). This is by far the best winter running top I own. While I don’t run in the snow (my climate gets into the 30’s at the lowest) this top will keep you warm and the tunic length means it won’t ride up.

I adore the fabric: light weight and a little shimmery. Like other Under Armour products it is great at wicking sweat, but what really sets this top apart is the styling. From the tunic length to the boat neck, this is one top that you can confidently wear out to run errands on your way back from your morning run.

I own this top in three different colors (pink, green & white) and I may be getting another one for the holidays! I constantly get compliments on it and it always comes as a surprise to others that it is workout gear! It is warm, beyond comfortable and looks great wash after wash! What more could you want out of a running top?!

What are your favorite winter running tops? I’d love to hear about others that can do double duty and wick sweat while looking stylish!

My Running Look

16 Nov

Wearing makeup while running is a controversial topic, especially if you’re at a race and plan to actually race. Purists don’t believe in wearing makeup while racing because looking cute has nothing to do with how fast you are. There are other camps that think it is horrible to show up at a race looking like death. I fall in between the two camps and prefer to wear eye-makeup and gloss but nothing on my face. I don’t wear foundation, concealer or any other face product besides sweatproof sunscreen because of sweat. I’ve gone through that “wear makeup to the gym” phase and all it results in are belmishes.

But, I do wear eye makeup. I believe a little liquid eyeliner and some waterproof mascara can really doll yourself up in an easy way. Couple that with a bright gloss and you look picture perfect, but not overdone. That means you’ll look great when you take your picture for being #1 in your age group!

Below are a few of my favorite liners, mascaras and glosses. Enjoy!

Best Black Eyeliner Pen: The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner ($20) doesn’t smudge or smear when wet, and lasts through you rubbing your eyes when sunscreen sneaks in around your sunglasses.

Looking for a Color Eyeliner: When I want some color (or a thick line to look like shadow) I turn to Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen ($14) The liner goes on smoothly and lasts all day. My favorites are true teal and deep plum!

Bargain Price But Amazing Eyeliner Wear: Wet and Wild has sure changed since I was a 12 year old putting on makeup during the morning bus ride! I love  Wet n Wild H20 Proof Liquid Eye Liner ($4, at drugstores) It says really well, but make sure to use an oil based remover (like Almay Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover) to take off the liner. It stays on really well so the oil-free removers may not work as well.

Plump Lashes: DiorShow Iconic Extreme Waterproof Mascara ($28) is AMAZING at giving volume that won’t smear away. Love it!

Looooong Lashes: I can’t say enough great things about Rimmel London Lycra Lash Extender Mascara ($8) It really lengthens and gives you a deep black lash!

Natural Lashes: I LOVE Neutrogena’s Healthy Volume Mascara ($6-$7) Such a long lasting natural look. I use it on day’s I want to look fresh but not necessairly glam.

Great Lip Stain: For a stain I have used CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain ($7). The great thing about a stain is that you put it on in the morning and then are able to use your preferred gloss/chap on top!

Great Color: L’Oreal Colour Riche LeGloss Lip Gloss ($8) in Watermelon Crush or Red Ravishing. It is really good for a 5k because anything beyond that and I’ve  (or my water bottle has) already eaten off the lip gloss.

Long Wear Gloss: I heart Smashbox Limitless Long Wear Gloss ($19) It is truly a long wear gloss that provides great color and shine through an entire 10k. I also really enjoy the glitter in the formula, not too big.

Staying Active While Injured

15 Nov

I know this blog’s focus is looking great while out on the run, but there hasn’t been any running the past two weeks! What’s happened?!

I’ve injured myself and am currently in physical therapy so unfortunately it looks like there won’t be much running for the rest of the month. I’ve been relegated to Pilates and not much else – yuck!

But, to keep myself active and provide some focus I have devised an incentive plan for working through an injury. This plan allows me to start off just doing the PT moves (and Pilates) and then gradually move up levels as I get better :

New Work Out Gear

As you can see it is designed to incentivize working out more as my injury gets better, but if I do more than the minimum I will still earn a weekly reward! I have set this up as something to keep me going over the next 4 months (eek!) but am looking forward to finally be doing moves beyond the physical therapy repetitions.

How do you work through injuries? What do you do with all that free time?
I don’t know what to do with myself Tuesday evenings because I’m so used to running with my training group for the past 6 months!
